THE MAKING OF DYNAMIC
DATING

The video lesson is a culmination of many
years of teaching, in which Cherry was able to understand her students' learning
needs, and refine her presentation. The video itself took four days to film, and
several more days to edit and complete. It was shot during the month of May, and
in the entire four days, the crew enjoyed about 20 minutes when it did not rain!
The video lesson is set in various fine locations in the West of England.
Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge, in Bristol, is the background to the
introduction on the Industrial Revolution. The wartime section was filmed in the
Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton. Popular antique fairs were used for finding the
pieces which illustrate the points made in the teaching, and the film makers
enjoyed much help and co-operation at Wells Antique Fair and Taunton Antiques
Market. The section on specific dating techniques was shot at Bristol Antiques
Market, where organisers laid the collective open to them, and dealers clamoured
to appear in the video lesson.
Peter appeared as guest expert imparting
knowledge on a range of factory backstamps, including Worcester marks. His ease
and fluency in front of the cameras earned him the nickname Peter-One-Take. For
reasons, that will not be pursued, the main presenter became affectionately
known as Cherry-Ten-Takes.

The ceaseless rain made the filming very difficult and
disrupted the schedule. When the crew found themselves at "Jen's Den",
Taunton, the final location, they were short of a dealer to appear. Jen's
friend, Annette White, had just finished a day of work and had dropped in at
Jen's Den for a relaxing cup of coffee. It was not to be. The crew worked on
her, and having obtained the slightest sign of agreement, Annette was hastily
made up by Jeannie. There was one brief rehearsal of her line, before the
cameras rolled. An elated but disbelieving Annette stated, "it took hours
before I could stop shaking but I am thrilled to appear in the video
lesson".
